Shelter Stone – The Artist and The Mountain is a year-long public art project taking the format of a newsprint publication.
The project is a partnership between the Strict Nature Reserve and The Mountain Bothy Association who are delivering the publications between mid-summer 2017 and mid-summer 2018 to over one hundred remote bothies, shelters and mountain huts across the UK, The Alps and Iceland.
The editioned publications will only be available for viewing in these remote locations.
Shelter Stone – The Artist and The Mountain features contributions by over forty artists and writers, all of whom have offered the newsprint publication as a survivalist tool for the walker or climber holed up in a bothy or shelter in bad weather, as a fire lighter, boot drier, draught exluder or toilet paper. Fire, water, wind, earth.
The project was launched at the Shelter Stone Howff in the heart of the Cairngorms, mid-summer 2017. At the end of the project in August 2018, the publication will be presented within a related Edinburgh Festival Exhibition Shelter Stone – The Artist and The Mountainwithin the Octagonal Rooms of the RSA.
