ARCTIC PAINTINGS RETURN TO SOURCE

It’s exactly 5 years since I was in Ny Alesund last, specifically to witness the annual rise of the sun, after it’s absence for several months.

On the 28th of February 2020, the sun rose over the mountain tops for 3 minutes, before setting again for almost 24 hours.

I was incredibly lucky to be making a painting at that exact moment, whilst out at Blandal Geotech Station (a few miles West from Ny Alesund). The sun wasn’t forecast to rise in Ny Alesund for another couple of days, so experiencing the golden sunbeams on that day was a beautiful and unexpected surprise.

Five years later, new versions of those original Arctic field Sketchbooks are back in Ny Alesund, at the same time of year, and have just been brilliantly photographed in the landscape where they originated, by Iain Rudkin, BAS/ NERC station manager and friend from Scotland.

This was the first of the concertina paintings I made in Ny Alesund on the 26th of February, 2020, a couple of days before I saw the sun rise.

This was the second concertina painting, which was made out at Blandal, looking back towards Ny Alesund and the incredible ‘Three Crowns’ mountains.

Full copyright stays with Georgia Rose Murray, me, the Artist. With thanks to Unseen Sketchbooks for collaborating to create a reproduction which can be enjoyed by more people who buy them and see them in galleries.

These Arctic sketchbooks are currently being exhibited as part of ‘A Piece of Sky’ Exhibition and can be bought directly from the gallery in Findhorn, or from me- please get in touch.
