ARCTIC PRESENTATION 02.09.23

ON SATURDAY THE 2ND OF SEPTEMBER AT 11.30AM, I WILL BE GIVING A PRESENTATION ABOUT MY WORK AT MORAY ART CENTRE IN FINDHORN.

ON MONDAY THE 11TH OF SEPTEMBER I WILL ALSO BEGIN TUTORING A NEW PAINTING CLASS AT MAC, 10.00-13.00. PLEASE BOOK HERE.

During the presentation I will describe some of my research processes including the journeys I have made to remote areas of Svalbard, specifically to witness natural light, darkness, and relatively untouched Arctic landscapes. Working alongside scientists has given me a basic understanding of some aspects of polar science and the changing climate, which feed into the paintings I create. Low temperatures and intense conditions have pushed me to developed rapid ‘en plien air’ painting techniques. The extreme weather and challenging environments I encounter can feel tough and also incredibly inspiring. I returned from my last expedition with frost bite, after making a 24 hour painting, when the temperature was minus 30 degrees Celsius. Observing natural colours shifting throughout the seasons is completely thrilling and captivating. I use sketchbooks, pens, water-based paint and sometimes homemade pigments, to capture my surroundings whilst working outside. Back in my Scottish studio I translate my holistic Arctic experiences, into large oil-based paintings on board, and sometimes create films, lithographs, and screen-prints.
